AURORA

Mixing frosty electronic textures, spare beats, and clear, emotive vocals, Norwegian singer/songwriter AURORA works in a similar dark pop milieu as artists like Lykke Li and Lorde. Born Aurora Aksnes near the city of Bergen, she began writing music and lyrics at a young age, releasing her debut single, "Awakening," in late 2013. Honing her live show and building on the momentum from the song, AURORA issued the follow-up single "Under Stars" in late 2014 and announced that she had signed with American label Glassnote. Her debut EP, "Running with the Wolves," was released in the spring of 2015.

Tove Lo

Crafting an idiosyncratic blend of pop influenced as much by 80's pop as by contemporary EDM and coupled with raw, brutally honest lyrics, Tove Lo made a name for herself as an award-winning performer and Grammy-nominated songwriter. Her honest, complex and autobiographical lyrical content has led to her being dubbed "the saddest girl in Sweden." In 2013, Lo was signed to Universal Music, Island and Polydor. The following year, Lo rose to fame with her debut album, Queen of the Clouds, which opened at number 14 on the US Billboard 200 chart in October 2014. It spawned the sleeper hit single "Habits (Stay High)," which peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Mavi Pheonix

Austria's Mavi Pheonix blends pop, rap, and R&B into a hard to classify but catchy mix. Born Marlene Nader to a family with Syrian roots, the rapper-singer/songwriter grew up attending English-speaking schools and listening to rock acts such as David Bowie and Queens of the Stone Age. When she was 11, she began playing guitar and producing her own music in GarageBand after her father gave her an old MacBook. Her musical tastes grew to include Kanye West and Drake, as well as Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga, and Nader chose the performing name Mavi Pheonix as a tribute to actor River Pheonix as well as for its symbolic meaning of renewal.

Lorde

Emerging as a fully formed enigma from her native New Zealand, Lorde tapped into an untouched well of alienation, becoming the poster child for a generation who found refuge from the eternal excess of the 2010s by submerging themselves in moody art. "Royals," the hit single that made her an international phenomenon, became a genuine sensation, topping the charts in country after country and being covered by elder statesmen like Bruce Springsteen and Jack White, a move that functioned a bit as a benediction. Lorde didn't need their blessing, though.
